Calling itself 'Anonymous', the hacker group justified the planned attack as a response to the Malaysian government's recent blocking of several file-sharing websites and its general policies toward censorship.
Referring to the Malaysian government, the group said, "We fear that if you make further decisions to take away human freedom, we are obligated to act fast and have no mercy." The group's statement was posted on YouTube, the massively popular video-sharing website.
Meanwhile, the Malaysian government said it was taking steps to avert the cyberattack. Information, Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said local cyber security officials were on the case, but did not go into detail about their efforts.
